Forgiveness. The word alone feels like betrayal, doesn't it? As if forgiving means saying the wound didn't matter, or that the one who hurt you gets another pass. Everything in you resists, and still something in you longs to be free. Chapter 17 of The REAL Matrix Reloaded is about that tension, and about what forgiveness actually is.
It was never about them
Forgiveness was never about them. It is about you. It is the act of loosening chains you have carried for years, chains that tighten around your laughter, press heavy on your chest, and let the past spill into every new touch, every new kiss, every new hope. Your body cannot tell the difference between memory and now. Every replay of the story burns your skin as if it were happening again. Cortisol drips like poison and anger hardens into armor.
So forgiveness is not a moral duty. It is biology. It is survival. It does not mean you forget. It does not mean you trust again. It does not mean the wound never cut. It means you choose not to let the pain decide the shape of your future. It is alchemy, turning poison into medicine and pain into wisdom. Think of the woman whose father left when she was seven, who grew up loving men who echoed his absence. Forgiveness for her was never about excusing him. It was about reclaiming herself, whispering, his leaving is not my worth.
Set the coal down
Picture yourself holding a burning coal, palms blistered, convinced that if you hold it long enough, the person who handed it to you will suffer. They are not the one burning. You are. Forgiveness is the moment you finally set it down, and anger was always the easy option. Bitterness is the default. Strength is choosing peace when pain begs you to stay bitter, and choosing love when hate feels safer.
The hardest forgiveness is the one you give yourself, for the nights you stayed too long, the words you regret, the dreams you abandoned. Self forgiveness is a quiet revolution, a tender voice saying, I did the best I could with who I was then. Forgiveness will not erase the memory. It will transform it, until one day you think of them and your body no longer tightens. Instead there is space, stillness, even peace. And in that silence, after the coal has cooled and the chains have fallen, you will feel something almost dangerous. Freedom.
