Grief walks in without knocking. It arrives in the middle of the ordinary, while you are stirring sugar into your coffee or folding laundry, and suddenly the room feels different. The air is heavier and the world is quieter, and you notice the absence before you notice anything else. I wrote Chapter 10 of The REAL Matrix Reloaded for Nikki, and for anyone else learning what loss actually does over time.
Time does not heal
People will try to help. They mean well, and they will say the things they have heard before because they don't know what else to say. Time will heal. They're in a better place. Those words are like paper held up in the rain. They don't hold the weight. Here is what time actually does. It does not heal. It teaches you how to carry what you cannot put down.
Part of what makes grief so heavy is the way we try to freeze the things we love, holding them exactly as they were. But everything we cherish is already in motion, and that motion is what made it precious. Your mind will look for them everywhere, in the scent of an unwashed shirt, in the chair where they always sat, in a song that makes you pause mid-task. The harder you cling to how it used to be, the harder it is to breathe. Letting go does not mean letting them slip away. It means making space for the relationship to take a different shape.
Joy is not forgetting
You might feel guilty the first time you laugh again, as if joy means forgetting. It doesn't. Joy and sorrow are not enemies. They are both proof of love. Over time grief changes shape. At the start it is sharp and impossible to ignore. Later it becomes a pulse, fading and returning without warning in the middle of a normal day. That is not failure. That is love finding a way to keep speaking.
The work is never to get over the loss. It is to live with it as part of you. That might mean carrying forward a tradition they loved, making choices they would be proud of, or simply being the person they saw in you when you could not see it yourself. One afternoon you will notice you are doing something they would have loved, cooking the dish they always made, helping someone without being asked, speaking up when silence would have been easier. You will realize you are not imitating them. You are continuing them. They are not in your past. They are in your hands, your voice, your choices. Grief does not end. It becomes a thread in the story you are still writing.
