I know a particular kind of woman from my work, and maybe you know her from a mirror. She is warm, perceptive, and genuinely brilliant, and she has learned to turn all of it down to a volume the people around her can handle. She answers questions she already knows the answer to so someone else can be the expert. She laughs at jokes a half second late to give them room. She has been told she is intimidating so many times that she now treats her own competence as a social problem to be managed.
Why the light gets dimmed
Nobody dims their light all at once. It happens in exchanges. You shine in a room, someone flinches, and you learn that being fully yourself has a cost. So you turn it down a notch, then another, and after years of small negotiations you arrive at a version of yourself that fits comfortably into other people's comfort. It usually starts with one person who fears your fire, someone who senses that if you ever became fully yourself, they would have to become someone too.
The tragedy is that the dimming is invisible from the inside. It feels like politeness. It feels like keeping the peace. It feels like being easy to love. But from the outside, the world is watching a person take the best of herself off the table, one concession at a time.
The cost of the dimming
Here is what the video says, and I mean it literally. When you dim your light for someone who fears your fire, the universe loses a brilliance it will never see again. This is not motivational decoration. The specific warmth, insight, and presence you withheld today does not go into storage. Nobody else has it. It is simply gone from the day, and the rooms that would have been changed by it were not changed.
Your presence reshapes things. Anyone who has ever walked into a gathering and lifted the whole temperature of it knows this is true, and knows it works in the other direction too, when that presence is muted. A person carrying a dimmed self is a quiet loss multiplied across every room she enters.
You were made to be the moment
The line I keep coming back to is this one. You were not made to be a whisper in someone's story. You were made to be the moment that changes everything. The difference between those two roles is not talent or luck. It is permission, and the only person who can finally grant it is you.
If you have spent years shrinking to fit someone's fear, notice that the fit is the problem. You deserve rooms where your fire is fuel, where your competence is a relief, and where the best of you is the thing people came for. Turn the light back up. Some people will adjust. The right ones were never bothered by it in the first place.
Watch She Carries More Warmth Than the World Realizes
I made this short for anyone who has been called too much by people who were simply too comfortable with her small. Watch it when you need the reminder, and pass it to a woman who deserves to hear it said out loud. If you have been working on self-worth, on embracing your true self, or on letting your presence fill a room again, this is a good place to start.
For a longer treatment of how we dim ourselves and how we come back, The REAL Matrix Reloaded audiobook takes the whole journey.
